Self-Care That Actually Helps

Mindelation Relationship & Couples Counselling

When life feels overwhelming, what do you do to feel better?

Maybe you stay in bed a little longer, scroll through your phone, watch another episode, keep yourself busy or simply withdraw from everyone for a while. These things can give us a much-needed break — but sometimes what feels like self-care in the moment can leave us feeling even more tired, disconnected or stuck.

The difference is not always about what you do. It is about whether it is genuinely helping you recover, reconnect and move forward.

1. Understand What Self-Care Really Means

Self-care is not simply about doing things that feel good in the moment. It is about recognising what you need and choosing ways to support your wellbeing over time.

A helpful question to ask yourself is:

“Is this helping me cope, or is it helping me avoid what I am feeling?”

Rest, sleep, movement, enjoyable activities and time for yourself can all be valuable. But emotional wellbeing also involves understanding your feelings and staying connected to the people and things that matter to you.

2. Notice What Is Draining You

If you have been feeling stressed, frustrated, lonely or emotionally exhausted, take some time to notice what may be contributing to it.

Ask yourself:

What has been taking most of my emotional energy?

Am I putting everyone else's needs before my own?

Have I become disconnected from people I care about?

Are my usual coping strategies actually helping?

Recognising a pattern can be an important first step towards change.

3. Stay Connected

Self-care does not always mean spending time alone.

Supportive relationships can play an important role in our wellbeing. Talking to someone you trust, spending meaningful time with family or reconnecting with a friend can provide comfort and perspective when life feels difficult.

4. Reconnect With What Matters

When life feels unsettled, reconnecting with your values can help you regain a sense of direction.

Think about what matters most to you — your relationships, family, health, personal growth, faith, work or other meaningful parts of your life.

Small actions that reflect your values can help you feel more grounded and connected to yourself.

5. Start With One Small Change

You do not have to change everything at once.

A small step such as setting a boundary, reconnecting with someone, creating a healthier routine, taking time to rest or doing something meaningful can make a difference.

And if you have been struggling to make changes on your own, seeking support is also a form of self-care.
